If you aren’t running your lawn mower in really cold temperatures however, there’s no noticeable difference between using 5W 40 oil instead of 10W 40 or SAE 30. 10W 40 and 5W 40 are just meant for warmer climates, so as long as you aren’t mowing the lawn in temperatures below -30 Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit) you’ll probably be okay.
I understand cold flow differences make the 0w flow better than 5w at a certain ultra cold temp, something like -35 degrees below 0. Likewise, 5w flows better than 10w at something like -30. Let's say you're living in warmer states in the CONUS, where temps never get below -20 (and rarely get that low). A roundup of the best in wireless charging from brands like Mophie, Belkin, Anker, Apple, NOMAD, Satechi, Twelve South, Samsung and others. IL. Apr 21, 2012. #1. Like the thread title says.. I have a KTM 990 SM-T and recommended oil (above 32F) is 10w-50 Motorex or 5w-40 Motorex at lower temps. The KTM dealer doesn't even stock the 10w-50, instead recommending 10w-40 or 15w-50. Brand isn't my issue at all, but the grade is. At $16/liter, the Motorex is simply cost prohibitive. The biggest difference between 10w30 and 5w40 oils is their viscosities. Specifically, 10w30 oil is thicker than 5w40 when the engine is cold. But interestingly, 5w40 oil has higher viscosity than 10w30 at operating temperature. If you need advice on which of these two oils is best for your particular use case, allow us to help. 1704 posts · Joined 2000. #8 · Feb 23, 2012. The factory HELM manual says 10W-30 is the preferred recommended oil from something like 10 below zero to 32 deg above zero (freezing point of water) and also O-K to run up to 90 degrees, but 15W-40 is preferred from freezing to 90. Colder than 10 below 5W-30 is recommended.

If you are driving your car in the heat of the summer in Atlanta, I would use the 10W-40 or maybe even 20W-50. In the winter 10W-30 might be better. I've been using Valvoline VR-1 20W-50 Racing oil for years in my 440, but then I'm not driving the car in the dead of winter. Oct 31, 2014.
